The History of Sambucol
Sambucol was first developed in 1991 by a world-renowned virologist who discovered that black elderberries also had significant antioxidant properties, thanks to the rich phytonutrient flavonoids (anthocyanins) present in the Black Elderberries. Certain flavonoids (anthocyanins) are found primarily in the pigments of dark blue and deep purple fruits such as the Black Elderberry. The natural Black Elderberries used in Sambucol, from which the juice is taken directly, is cultivated and harvested in respect of GAP (Good Agricultural Practices), ensuring full process traceability. Importantly, the harvest season for Black Elderberry generally occurs from mid-August to mid-September. Over the year’s close collaboration and partnerships between the farms, scientists and manufacturers have been implemented to ensure the unique method of manufacturing the Black Elderberry juice is sustained.
Harvest season for Sambucol Black Elderberries takes place in Austria and Hungary during August-September when berries are ripe and mature, sufficiently large, and have changed to their distinct purplish-black color. We use only the Haschberg variety of premium cultivar elderberries, handpicked from trees grown in dedicated orchards, devoted to Black Elderberries. Haschberg Black Elderberries can have up to twice the anthocyanin content of wild elderberry, even when of the same genus (Sambucus nigra L. (Europa)).
Sambucol uses hundreds of tons of elderberries each year and is a trusted brand that qualifies under the strict European Fruit Juice Laws. Other manufacturers may use the same variety; however, it is the specific, proprietary production process that preserves the whole berry benefits that give Sambucol its unique properties.
Our berries are handpicked once per year, milled, and cold-pressed by using state-of-the-art technology.
Additional microfiltration ensures that the highest levels of phytonutrients are preserved and present in the juice.
The juice is stored in a completely aseptic system, solvent-free, alcohol-free.
When ready for manufacturing, each batch is carefully transported to our European production sites where Sambucol finished goods are produced under full GAP/GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) conditions.
